R/V Mirai normally operates three 4 hr bridge watches, stood by 1st, 2nd and 3rd officers along with a quartermaster. A dayworking Chief Officer coordinates watch and deck department operations on the Master's behalf and supervises all deck evolutions including science operations. During intensive science operations, the two junior officers switch to 6 and 6 watches, allowing the 1st Officer to rotate with the Chief Officer for on deck supervision.

Rick Crawford from the Fresh Water Institute is studying zooplankton and arctic cod and their place within the Arctic food chain.

University of Western Ontario Graduate Student Lisa Pickle on her first Arctic voyage. Studying zooplankton in the Arctic food chain, Lisa comes from research work at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI).

A deep water core in 670m of water was the first of three cores planned for the length of the Mackenzie Canyon. A midwater and a shallow (30-50m) core will follow aiding in the paleo-oceanographic studies being conducted by Geo-physicist Steve Blasco. Chief Officer Hiroki Maruyama supervises the deployment of the 20m long titanium alloy piston core.

The cooks onboard have continued to outdo themselves. Eddy Carmack enjoys sushi dinner before departing the ship 20 September.
