Dr Eddy Carmack, senior Canadian onboard, is liaison between the Chief Scientist, Koji Shimada, and the Canadian group of scientists. As this is the first time that western science personnel have sailed onboard Mirai, there is plenty to learn from both cultures.

Main propulsion system is extremely flexible. Two CPP props can be spun using either 4 main diesel engines, two per shaft thru main couplings, or by two electric motors which enable "silent running" for research. Top speed with 4 diesels, 16.5 kts, with two electric motors, 10 kts. It IS possible to operate one side diesel, the other electric, but this is not done in practice. Three primary stand alone generators, two shaft generators and one emergency generator. All controlled from the touch screen.

Mirai's track to date from Wainwright AK, inbound. RV with LSSL and SWL off Barrow, then NW to stations along the NorthWind Ridge. Now bound for commencement of SHEBA transect line along 142W
