| We woke this poor fellow up from a slumber on a floe. We had stopped to conduct a deep cast, about 1/2nm from his chaise. Curiosity finally got the better of him and he swam up to the stern, trying to get our scent, nose twitching furiously. Perhaps all he saw was a wondrous large growly floe with a great herd of colourful coated potential meals. | Connie Lovejoy, Universite Laval, is studying the bottom of the arctic food chain, at the bacterial level. She began her Arctic summer research onboard CCGS Louis S. St, Laurent and transferred to R/V Mirai off Point Barrow, AK. |
